Telos’ advanced grow lights have helped scientists at Stratford Butterfly Farm observe butterfly behaviours never recorded in captivity. With precise spectral tuning and optimised volumetric energy distribution, Telos 0008 systems play a vital role in supporting exotic butterflies and plants at Stratford Butterfly Farm.
Telos 0008 grow lights are market-leading in longevity, safety, and durability. Engineered for high-humidity environments, they optimise plant growth and support biodiversity in controlled settings, including advanced medical facilities.
Stratford Butterfly Farm installed specialised Telos 0008 systems to create precise atmospheric conditions, protecting their exotic species from UK conditions. Telos’ LEDs deliver a precisely tuned light spectrum and 91.6 degree beam angle. This replicates natural sunlight for exotic plants common in the butterflies’ natural habitat. These systems eliminate hotspots and photodamage, ensuring even light distribution and protecting the butterflies and plants from excessive heat and light overlap.
Telos 0008 systems also optimise the exotic plants’ hosting capacity. Telos’ precision-engineered light spectrum maximises the plants’ nutrient density and nectar production, supporting plant health. Host plants are essential for butterfly reproduction, as butterflies lay eggs only on specific plant species their caterpillars can eat. Without host plant availability, butterflies will not breed.
In an interview with Telos, Richard Douglas-Read, the Head of Horticulture at Stratford Butterfly Farm, said: “We chose Telos primarily due to the high output of light from each unit and the cheap running cost.”
Richard continues, “We’ve had huge success using the lighting system, growing many different types of plants. Primarily flowering plants for nectar sources but also … specific butterfly host plants.”
Telos fixtures have been used by production companies associated with the BBC on award-winning programmes such as The Green Planet. Stratford Butterfly Farm is also a frequent filming for David Attenborough and other wildlife documentaries.
Telos Founder & Technical Director, Daniel Edwards, said: “Our goal is to produce the most efficient, reliable, and robust grow lights available. While our fixtures are primarily used in medical horticulture, we are continuously excited by the ever-expanding range of applications for our lights. We look forward to seeing where our fixtures will be installed next!”
